New Orleans: Cities of the Dead

You get a distinct view while visiting New Orleans with the above ground cemeteries. Also referred to as the Cities of the Dead, the cemeteries are filled with above ground tombs that have been bleached by the sun. When flowers are placed at the tombs they appear extra vibrant against the white tombs. I visited Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 located in the Garden District. This cemetery inspired Anne Rice for her book Interview with a Vampire with a wrought iron tomb, and is one of the oldest, and the most filmed cemetery in New Orleans. Check out this self guided tour or tours are also provided at the cemetery. I wish I had found the link to the self guided tour when I visited, although I still enjoyed just walking around and observing the tombs.
