If you want to get out of Boston without traveling far, Deer Island is a perfect solution. After visiting Saugus Iron Works in the morning, we made our way over to Winthrop. Winthrop is a town in Massachusetts located next to East Boston, near the airport. Our first stop in Winthrop, and the one which took up the majority of our time in the town, was to Deer Island. Here you’ll find the Deer Island Treatment Plant. Itt also provides a great walking path along the water, and also includes a lighthouse look out point with multiple lighthouses to find. It was very refreshing to get out of Boston, even though we weren’t far from the city at all. We were able to watch planes fly in to land and had a great view of the city skyline. After our nice hike we stopped at the Italian restaurant Antique Table for a late lunch.
Getting There
The easiest and quickest way to get to the Winthrop and Deer Island is by car. However public transportation is not impossible, you would just need to transfer. Take the blue line to Orient Heights stop, walk to the bus stop, and take either the 712 or 713 bus.
