Artwork covers the streets of Rio. I loved walking around the city to see the scattered graffiti, beautiful architecture, and statues dedicated to the culture and history of the city. The artwork is bright and bold, with painted murals covering the walls near any busy tourist attraction. The following is some of my favorite artwork in Rio de Janeiro.
Tiles
Portugal’s colonization of Brazil brought Azulejos, or traditional tiling to the country. In Portugal, tiles cover buildings, sidewalks, and murals. This practice is seen around Rio with covered religious buildings, and murals made of tile. Of course, there’s also the Escadaria Selarón, stairs composed of tiles from around the world. Learn more about the Escadaria Selarón on my post 3 Things You Can’t Miss in Beautiful Rio De Janeiro.
Artwork
Murals stretch across building walls. Graffiti of well-known pop culture figures pop up in car parks and neighborhood walls. Statues line streets and beaches. It’s not difficult to spot the bright artwork that brings vibrancy and light to the city.
Architecture
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again; I love architecture. I loved the brightly painted buildings, I saw every color in the rainbow. The details were just as stunning with brightly colored railings and shutters, roof tiles, and intricate molding. My favorite was the archway in the middle of the city seen below and the lavender house with red roof tiles that used a bathtub as a planter. The architecture really amplified my love of the artwork in Rio de Janeiro.
